Once competent will be working shifts including weekends and evenings, at the start whilst learning the skills and safety compliance will be Monday- Friday as these will be college days in your first year. Total hours per week: 35
What will the apprentice be doing?
Within Northern Engineering, you’ll have the opportunity to work on a range of trains at Northern, depending on your depots location, including the Class 158 Super Sprinter (Diesel multiple-unit) and our £500m fleet of new trains, the Class 195 (Diesel multiple-unit) and Class 331 (Electric multiple-unit). You will complete a number of placements in different departments at your home depot and during this time you'll learn all about engineering and other key elements of the business.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Northern, Myerscough College and NTAR (National Training Academy for Rail). On completion -gaining a Level 3 qualification in Rail Engineering Technician on Traction and Rolling Stock.
Your first year learning at Myerscough College in Preston (accommodation will be provided). starting with a qualification at L2 & L3 Traction and Rolling Stock qualification
Year 2, at your depot by building your knowledge, gaining hands on experience.
final year putting the theory and knowledge you have learnt.
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
Starting as a Rail Engineering Technician Apprentice you will have the opportunity to follow a range of different career paths. Once qualified, you can apply to work within Northern perhaps within the Production teams employed as a Maintenance Engineer with potential to then move on to be a Team Leader or Technical Engineer. Alternatively, you could move around - from production to safety for example.
